Frequently asked questions

What to know before you inspect or clean a file.

Is it legal to remove an AI watermark from my images?

You may remove metadata from content you created or have the rights to modify. Removing markers from someone else’s work can create legal risk, including under copyright law. OutWatermark AI is for your own content only. See the Compliance page and seek legal advice when needed.

Does OutWatermark AI remove Google SynthID?

Purification uses controlled transformations and re-encoding to weaken latent signals such as SynthID. It cannot guarantee removal because SynthID is designed to resist transformations. Removing C2PA, EXIF, and XMP metadata is complete and lossless.

Which file formats are supported?

The browser analyzes JPEG, PNG, and WebP, plus top-level C2PA boxes in MP4, MOV, AVIF, and HEIC containers. Surgical cleanup supports the same formats; image purification supports JPEG, PNG, and WebP.

Does metadata removal reduce image quality?

No. Surgical cleanup removes only metadata bytes and does not resample the rest of the file. The image remains pixel-for-pixel identical. Optional latent-signal purification intentionally re-encodes the image.

Are my files stored on your servers?

No. Analysis and cleanup run entirely in your browser. The file never leaves your device, no upload or storage occurs, and it is never used to train a model.

What is the difference between C2PA and SynthID?

C2PA Content Credentials are signed metadata attached to a file. Platforms can strip them. SynthID is a latent signal embedded in pixels or audio and is designed to survive transformations, but it carries less context. OpenAI combines both on images.

Why do platforms remove C2PA metadata?

Social platforms often rewrite uploads for compression, storage optimization, and privacy. That process does not always preserve metadata. The C2PA specification acknowledges that provenance metadata can be removed.

Is OutWatermark AI free?

Yes. AI watermark detection, metadata removal, and the available local cleanup tools are free and require no account.
